Astronomical units is one which means measurement equal to the average distance between the sun and the earth. Another unit is light years which is the measurement equal to the distnce light travels in one year. The Nebular Theory. What is the nebular theory?
The nebular theory is the theory of the start if the solar system. A cloud of gas and dust, as it continued and swirled faster the solar system was devloped from it.
What were the steps in the formation of our galaxy and solar system?
Gravity caused the gases and dust to be drawn closer and the rotation gradually increased and the cloud began to collapse and flatten out. The matter inside clumped together into masses to makes planetetimals and in larger clumps to create protoplanetary bodies. -A. Andrews

What is the Nebular Theory?
  • A nebula is a cloud of dust cast off from other stars. the Nebular Theory is that the Earth evolved from a Nebula.

What is the Big Bang Theory?
  • The Big Bang Theory is the thought the universe consisted of almost entirely energy, concentrated into a volume smaller than a grain of sand. the temperatures began increasing which caused the universe to expand rapidly, thus creating our universe.

In your own words, explain the nebular theory for the beginning of our solar system.
  • A cloud of gas and dust were drawn together due to gravity, in which at the same time started to spin. This spin increased so much that the gas started to collapse and spin faster creating a disc. Most of the mass was concentrated in the middle, but the gas along the edge clumped together to form large bodies of matter. But, this mass continued to spinning, and collapsing, that the pressure and temperature of the gas started to rise. When the temperature reached 15 million degrees Celsius, nuclear fusion started, creating the sun.

Where is the solar system in our Galaxy?
Galaxies are classified according to their shape: elliptical, spiral, or irregular. Our home galaxy is called the Milky Way Galaxy. It is a flat spiral
pinwheel-shaped collection of stars held together by their mutual gravitational attraction. The Milky Way Galaxy is a swath of lght =, formed by the glow of billions of stars stretching across the dark night sky.
our solar system is located in one of the spiral arms about 2/3 of the way out from the center of the galaxy.
According to the Big Bang Theory, the universe its self was formed between 12 to 14 billion yrs. ago. And our home galaxy, 10 billion yrs. ago.

Where does matter and energy in the universe come from and where does it go?
The Law of Conservation of Mass states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, therefore the matter and energy within the universe is energy that has and always will be there. The Law of Conservation of Mass specifically applies to a closed system, like our solar system, where energy cannot be allowed to leave or enter. Matter is never destroyed, it is simply change from one state to another, such as from liquid to gas, etc.

Distances in the universe (pg.E6)
Astronomers use larger units for measurements. When discussing distances inside the solar system they often use astronomical units. One AU is the average distance of the Earth from the Sun. It is equal to 149,598,770 km. For distances to stars and galaxies astronomers use a measurement called light years. Since a light year travels really fast, a light year is a very large distance.
