Activity 4 Investigation
Given the following information, calculate the energy released when an asteroid collides with earth:
1.)(a) Volume is 33510.32
(b) Mass is 261380496
(c)
2.)(a) V= 10 and V squared= 100
(b) R cubed= 1000
(c) if something is small/large but traveling fast, it will have impact -Andrew Morris
Think About It
  • I think the meteor that created Meteor Crater is was not very large in size. It could have been a medium size meteor that had a very high impact velocity. The meteor could also could have had a very high density.
  • The impact of the meteor could have killed everything within a few miles. -Shayam Patel

Main Idea : Asteroid- A rocky body that is smaller than planets. They are left overs from the formation of the solar system.
Details: Asteroids effect the Earth because they are very close to it. They are mostly in the region between Jupiter and Mars called the asteroid belt and are mostly consisted of rock and metal . - Kira Turner

Main Idea: Comet- Masses of frozen gases (ices) and rocky dust particles. Like asteroids, they are leftovers from the formation of the solar system.
Details: Their orbits are usually very eccentric with large inclinations. The orbits of many comets are very large, with distances from the Sun of greater than 20,000 astronomical units (AU). -Carter Gentry

Details: Many comets in orbit , orbit around the sun. The orbits are usually very eccentric with large inclinations. Icy comets impacted eart and is said to form oceans on earth. These measurements are performed by (AU). - Kori Stephens

1. Where are asteroids most abundant in our solar system?
Asteroids are most abundant in a ring called the Asteroid belt. This Asteroid belt is located in a region between Mars, and Jupiter. There are thousands of asteroids in this belt, as of which are evolving around the sun with great eccentricity.
-Josh Branker

Activity 4, 2 column notes:
Meteoeoids, meteors, and meteorites are all bodies orbiting around the earth. They are the same thing but the names of them change when in different locations of the atmosphere. Meteriods are tny particles in space, like leftover dust from a comet's tail or fragment of asteroids. Meteoroids are called meteors when they enter Earth's atmosphere, and meteorites when they enter Earth's surface.

Meteoroids are calles meteors when they enter Earths atmosphere and meteorites when they reach earths surface. About 80% that hit earths surface are stony and 15% metals and other materials.
Details: They are composed of tiny particles in soace like leftover dust from a comets tail or fragments of asteroids. About 1000 tons of material is added to the earth each year by the meteorites.

Comets are masses of frozen gases and ices with rocky dust particles, which are leftovers from formation of the solar system. Many comets are in orbit around the sun, orbits are usually very eccentric with large inclinations. Orbits of comits are very large, and their icy head is called the nucleus. Comets are believed to have collided with Earth since the Earths early formation.

3. Why do comets have tails? Why do the tails point away from the sun?
Comets have tails because it’s actually frozen water. Comets also have gas and dust inside of them. As a comet approaches the sun, it starts to heat up. The ice transforms directly from a said to a vapor, releasing the dust particles embedded in inside. Sunlight and the stream of charged particles flowing from the sun (Solar Wind) sweeps the evaporated material and dust back in a long tail. So the tail is actually the ice melting. It points away from the sun because the solar winds blow the gases and ice away from the sun so that is why it points away from it.

2. It could have produced enough dust to cloud the Earth's atmosphere for months. This would have blocked out the sunlight and kill many plants, leading to animals dying.
3. comets have tails which solar winds blow the gases and dust in the coma in a diretion away from the sun, causing the tails to form. The solar wind comes from the sun so they move away from the sun.- Carlos Davila
external image halleys.jpgthis is the well know comet. Halley's comet is a well known visitor of Earth, she comes around about every 76 yrs. The tail you see is from the sun pushing it into the oppisite direction. Comets have collided with the Earth since its early form. There are many comets that have been seen but Halley is the most common one I know of. -Amani

pg E 37 Think about it
How large in diameter do you think the meteor was that formed meteor crater?- It may have been about at least half the size of the crater itself.
How would the impact of the meteor have affected living things near the crater?- it would have whiped out all life near it. -Angelo Nuni

1) Where are asteroids most abundant in the solar system?
Asteroids are most abundant between Jupiter and Mars which is called the asteroid belt.
2) What are the compositions of the major kinds of meteorites?
About 15% of meteorites consist of iron and nickel and are very dense. The rest are a mixture of iron-nickel and stony material.

Investigation 4 E39
Explain how the energies of these four imact events compare to some other known phenomenon.
The energies of the 4 impact events compare to some other known phenomenon like an atomic bomb, it's very dangerous because it has alot of energy and because it may be greater than an atomic bomb, it can cause a greater danger.

Asteroids and comets (PG E.41)
Asteroids are rocky bodies smaller than planets. They are considered left overs from the formation of the solar system. The closest recant approach of an asteroid on Earth was asteroid 1994 XM11, on December 9, 1994. Comets are frozen gases (ices) and rock dust particles. They are also leftovers of solar system. There orbits are usually very eccentric.
-Andrej Gavric
Geo Words :
1.) Solar Wind –a movement of fast moving particles leaving the sun.
2.) Meteoroid – a small rock which come off of a comets tails or asteroids
3.) Meteor (Shooting Star ) – are meteoroids that enter Earth’s atmosphere
4.) Meteorite- are meteoroids that survive and hit Earth’s surface
- Brandy Gibson

Information:
The closest recent approach of an asteriod was asteriod 1994 XM II. On december 9, 1994 the asteriod approach within 115,000 km of the earth. Then on March 22, 1989 the asteriod 4581 Aslepius came within 1.8 lunar distances, which is close to 690,000 Km away!
